New York

I have just accepted an offer from The D.E.Shaw Company in New York City. I got a wierd feeling after finishing up the verbal offer. It hit me that I am actually leaving the great city of Austin, Texas. If you want to check out the company, the website is:

The website is not that cool but the company surely is. I hope my skin will adjust to the weather !!

Eid Mubarak

Today is Eid or the equivalent of Christmas for the Muslims all over the world. The religion of Islam has two Eids during the year. The first one is at the end of the fasting month, also known as Ramadan. To celebrate the end of that month, we have our first Eid. Today is our second Eid. On this day, Prophet Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son. This story I beleive is also believed by Christians. He was asked by God to sacrifice his son as a test of his faith. He took God's command and was going to proceed when God said you have passed my ultimate test. Instead of sacrificing your son, sacrifice an animal. On this day, Muslims sacrifice goats and cows and distribute it to the poor and needy. This Eid is the bigger one of the two.

This Eid is another one I wont be able to celebrate with my family. If you did not know, my family is living in Pakistan now. I have missed all Eids since like 2001. Imagine not getting to spend Christmas with your family for that long of a time. These are times when you wonder why did you abroad? Was it worth going half way around the world to get a degree and miss such important parts of the year? I went to the Eid prayers this morning and saw all families rejoicing and having fun. They were distributing presents to the little kids while others made plans to have a big lunch or dinner. I stood in the middle thinking I wish I was back home.

Rose Bowl

I noticed that I did not post on the Rose Bowl earlier. I guess being at WSC 2005 made me forget. I was never into football. I lived in the Middle East and soccer was king there. The first game I actually watched was when Texas surprisingly lost to Stanford in one of the biggest upsets of the year. That was my freshman year in college. Slowly, I tried to understand the game. Then, I started to bleed orange. Yet, the whole school used to get disappointed because we never reached a big bowl game. Whenever we had a chance to play in a big game, we lost and when we got to play in a big game somehow, we lost. I remember when Youssef came to Austin during the Texas-OU weekend. I pumped him up so much telling him we are going to win. We went to the prep rally too. Yet, we lost so badly in that match that he keeps reminding me of it and supported Michigan in the Rose Bowl because of that lost game. This was the biggest game that Texas had a chance to play in a LONG TIME. What made it more interesting was that it was during WSC 2005. We have a big contingent of both Michigan and Texas people at the conference. I know this was quite an important game for Michigan. Dont know how much since I have not attended that school. But this game was HUGE for us. The coach had to prove that he is worthy of winning the BIG ONE. I wanted to see my school win one big game before I leave. The school had to prove that they were worthy of playing in the Rose Bowl. And what a game it was. I had to miss about 80% of the game due to sessions. I was lucky though to watch the end. A field goal made it 38-37 and we won the biggest game in our recent history. I would like to applaud the Michigan Wolverines for a wonderful game. They played well and were leading into the 4th quarter. Thank you for being a great opponent. The futre looks bright for you. The present is for the Senior Longhorns who would cherish this memory forever as well as for all those people who BLEED ORANGE.

Contemplating

which labtop to buy. This would be my first labtop so if you have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Kelley Lowes, an OGX member of AIESEC Austin, has a blog. She is currently studying abroad in Germany. Her blog address is http://kelleyl.nomadlife.org.

I am going to New York City next week. I have been trying to arrange the trip for 2 weeks so I was quite glad I got the call today confirming the trip. I am going there for an office visit. So, if any Aiesecers want to meet, just let me know. I can meet Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Not looking forward to the EAST COAST COLD WEATHER!!

As a graduate

it feels wierd. Tomorrow is the first day of classes here at the University of Austin. I dont have to go to the Co-op bookstore and buy over-priced books. I dont have to go around the campus to find buildings I have never heard of for my classes. I dont have to worry about being able ot make in time for my classes. What has been routine for the last 4 1/2 years is not routine anymore. I will experience how it feels like to live in Austin when not being a student in the next few days. Plus, I have to live with my sister for the next few weeks since my lease ended. So thats happening in my life.

Secret weapons

I just read an article indicating some weapons the United States considered some years ago. Unbelievable:
